The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) are a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometers east of the coast of Argentina. The islands consist of approximately 200 islands, with East Falkland and West Falkland being the largest. The capital is Stanley, located on East Falkland. The Falkland Islands are known for their rich wildlife, including seals, penguins, and seabirds, and their strategic location near shipping lanes. The economy is based on fishing, tourism, and sheep farming, with the islands also having oil and mineral resources. Despite being a British territory, the sovereignty of the islands has been disputed by Argentina, which claims them as the Malvinas. The dispute led to the Falklands War in 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The Falkland Islands are self-governing but remain under British sovereignty.
