French Guiana is an overseas region of France, located on the northeastern coast of South America, bordered by Brazil to the south and east, and Suriname to the west. It is the only part of France in South America and is known for its tropical climate, dense rainforests, and rich biodiversity. The capital city is Cayenne, located near the coast. French Guiana is home to the infamous ĂŽles du Salut (Salvation Islands), which were once used as a French penal colony. The region’s economy is based on agriculture, fishing, gold mining, and the European Space Agency’s Guiana Space Centre, which is a major launch site for European space missions. French Guiana remains an integral part of France, and the inhabitants are French citizens with full rights.
