French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France, located in the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between California and Australia. It consists of more than 100 islands, spread over an area of about 5 million square kilometers. The capital city is Pape’ete, located on the island of Tahiti, which is the largest and most populous island in the group. French Polynesia is famous for its tropical climate, pristine beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and lush islands, which make it a popular tourist destination. The economy is based on tourism, agriculture (such as vanilla and coconut), pearl farming, and fishing. As a part of France, French Polynesia has a unique political status that provides autonomy in most domestic matters while still being governed by France for defense, foreign policy, and monetary matters.
