The Gambia is a small West African country bordered by Senegal on three sides and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the smallest country on the African mainland, stretching along the Gambia River for nearly its entire length. The capital and largest city is Banjul, located on the coast. The country’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, including groundnuts (peanuts), rice, and fisheries, with tourism becoming an increasingly important sector. The Gambia has a democratic government and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Despite its small size, The Gambia has a rich cultural heritage, with diverse ethnic groups and a significant Islamic influence.
