Haiti is a Caribbean country located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic to the east. Haiti is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. Its capital and largest city is Port-au-Prince, located in the Ouest Department. Haiti has a turbulent history, including its independence from France in 1804, making it the first post-colonial independent nation in Latin America and the first to abolish slavery. The country has a diverse landscape, ranging from mountainous terrain to tropical coastlines, but faces significant challenges, including poverty, political instability, and the aftermath of natural disasters, such as the devastating 2010 earthquake. Haiti’s economy is based on agriculture, particularly coffee, sugar, and mangoes, along with remittances from the Haitian diaspora.
