Japan is an island country located in East Asia, consisting of a group of 4 main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—along with thousands of smaller islands. It is situated in the Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Korean Peninsula and China, and north of the Philippines. The capital and largest city is Tokyo, which is one of the world’s largest and most influential economic and cultural centers. Japan has a highly developed economy, known for its technology, manufacturing (especially automobiles and electronics), and exports. The country is also famous for its rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional arts, architecture, literature, and food, particularly sushi and ramen. Japan operates under a constitutional monarchy, with the Emperor as the ceremonial head of state, while the Prime Minister is the head of government. It is a member of the United Nations, the G7, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
