Libya is a North African country bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. Its capital and largest city is Tripoli, located on the Mediterranean coast. Libya has a predominantly desert landscape, with the majority of its land covered by the Sahara Desert. The country is rich in oil reserves, which has historically made it one of the wealthiest countries in Africa. Libya’s economy is heavily dependent on oil exports, with the sector accounting for the majority of its income. Following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has experienced political instability, with ongoing conflicts and a divided government. Libya is a member of the United Nations, the African Union (AU), and the Arab League.
