Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is a country in Southeast Asia, occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor, with Indonesia to the west and the Timor Sea to the south. It is known for its mountainous terrain, tropical climate, and recent history of independence, having gained full sovereignty from Indonesia in 2002. The capital and largest city is Dili, which functions as the political and economic center. Timor-Leste has a developing economy based on oil and gas exports, agriculture, and international aid, with increasing focus on tourism and infrastructure. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic, and a member of the United Nations (UN), Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN, observer), and the G77.
