Brunei Darussalam is a sovereign state located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, bordered by Malaysia and the South China Sea. It is divided into two separate parts, with Malaysia’s Sarawak state in between. The capital and largest city is Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei is a wealthy nation, primarily due to its oil and natural gas reserves, which drive its high-income economy. The country is an absolute monarchy, ruled by the Sultan of Brunei, who is both the head of state and government. Brunei follows a strict interpretation of Islamic law (Sharia). It is a member of the United Nations, ASEAN, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
