Chile is a long, narrow country in South America, stretching along the Pacific Ocean, bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage to the south. Its capital and largest city is Santiago, which serves as the political, economic, and cultural center. Chile has a diverse geography, including the Atacama Desert (the driest non-polar desert in the world), the Andes Mountains, fertile valleys, and Patagonia in the south. The country has a high-income economy, driven by mining (especially copper), agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Chile is a unitary presidential republic and a member of the United Nations, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Pacific Alliance, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and MERCOSUR (associate member).
