Cyprus has a rich cultural heritage, influenced by Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern civilizations. The country has been divided since 1974, with the Republic of Cyprus controlling the south and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized only by Turkey, controlling the north. Cyprus has a high-income economy, driven by tourism, financial services, and shipping. It is a member of the European Union (EU), the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Eurozone, using the euro as its currency.
