Guyana is a South American country located on the northeastern coast, bordered by Venezuela to the west, Brazil to the south and southeast, and Suriname to the east. Its capital and largest city is Georgetown, located on the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is known for its rainforests, savannas, and tropical rivers, including the Essequibo and Berbice Rivers. The country’s economy has historically been based on sugar, rice, and gold production, but more recently, oil has become a significant part of its economy. Guyana has a diverse population, with significant communities of East Indian, African, Amerindian, and European descent. It is the only country in South America where English is the official language. Guyana is a member of the United Nations, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
