Iran is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Armenia and Azerbaijan to the northwest, Turkmenistan to the northeast, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman to the south, and Iraq and Turkey to the west. Its capital and largest city is Tehran, which is also the country’s economic, political, and cultural center. Iran has a diverse geography, including mountain ranges such as the Zagros and Alborz, vast deserts, and a long coastline along the Persian Gulf. The country is rich in natural resources, particularly oil and natural gas, which are central to its economy. Iran is an Islamic republic with a theocratic political system, where the Supreme Leader holds the highest authority, and it is known for its historic contributions to culture, science, and philosophy. Iran is a member of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
