The Marshall Islands is a Pacific island country located in the Micronesia region, consisting of 29 atolls and 5 isolated islands, spread over about 2 million square miles of ocean. The country lies just north of the equator, between Hawaii and the Philippines. Its capital is Majuro, which is also the largest city and economic center. The Marshall Islands is a self-governing country in free association with the United States, with the U.S. responsible for its defense and foreign policy. The country is known for its tropical climate, beautiful coral reefs, and vibrant marine life, making it a popular tourist destination for diving. The economy is largely based on fisheries, phosphate mining, and financial services. It also receives financial aid from the U.S. under the Compact of Free Association.
