Martinique is an overseas region of France, located in the Caribbean Sea, east of Puerto Rico and south of Dominica. It is one of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. Its capital and largest city is Fort-de-France, situated on the western coast. Martinique is known for its tropical climate, lush rainforests, and volcanic landscapes, including the active Mount PelĂ©e, which erupted in 1902. The island’s economy is based on tourism, agriculture (particularly bananas, sugar, and rum), and services. Martinique is a part of France and thus a member of the European Union (EU) and uses the euro as its currency. While it is politically a region of France, Martinique retains a distinct Caribbean cultural heritage, with influences from French, African, Indian, and Caribbean traditions.
