Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean Sea, southwest of Antigua and Barbuda and northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is part of the Lesser Antilles and is known for its lush volcanic landscape and tropical climate. The island’s capital, Plymouth, was largely abandoned due to the eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano in 1995, and since then, the administrative center has been Brades. Montserrat is often referred to as the “Emerald Isle of the Caribbean” due to its Irish heritage, which is reflected in its culture, music, and annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The economy relies on tourism, agriculture, and government services, with financial aid from the United Kingdom playing a crucial role. The population is relatively small, and the island is known for its volcanic activity, particularly the Soufrière Hills Volcano, which has significantly shaped Montserrat’s modern history.
