Nauru is a small island country located in the central Pacific Ocean, northeast of Australia. It is the third smallest country in the world by area, covering only 21 square kilometers, and has one of the smallest populations of any sovereign state. The capital is officially undefined, but government offices are in Yaren, making it the de facto capital. Nauru is known for its phosphate mining industry, which once made it one of the richest countries per capita, but economic challenges followed the depletion of phosphate reserves. Today, the economy relies on phosphate exports, offshore banking, and financial aid from Australia. The island has a tropical climate and is largely flat, with a central plateau known as the Topside, where most phosphate deposits were mined. Due to its small size, Nauru has no armed forces, relying on Australia for defense.
