San Marino is a landlocked microstate in Southern Europe, entirely surrounded by Italy, and located on the slopes of Mount Titano in the Apennine Mountains. It is known as the world’s oldest republic, founded in 301 AD, and retains a strong sense of historical independence and cultural heritage. The capital is San Marino, and the largest settlement is Serravalle. San Marino has a developed economy, based on banking, tourism, industry, and the sale of postage stamps and coins, with one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world. It is a unitary parliamentary republic with two heads of state known as the Captains Regent. San Marino is a member of the United Nations (UN), Council of Europe, Organisation of the Francophonie, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but it is not a member of the European Union, although it uses the euro as its official currency through an agreement with the EU.
