The Syrian Arab Republic, commonly known as Syria, is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon, with a coastline along the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its ancient cities, cultural heritage, and strategic location, but has been deeply affected by a prolonged civil war since 2011, resulting in widespread displacement and humanitarian challenges. The capital and largest city is Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, serving as the political and cultural center. Syria’s economy, once based on agriculture, oil, and services, has been severely disrupted by conflict. It is a unitary presidential republic under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad. Syria is a member of the United Nations (UN), Arab League (suspended from 2011 to 2023), Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
