Tonga is a Polynesian island country located in the South Pacific Ocean, comprising 169 islands, of which 36 are inhabited, spread across four main island groups. It is known for its tropical climate, coral reefs, and strong cultural traditions, including a monarchical system that has existed for centuries. The capital and largest city is Nukuʻalofa, situated on the island of Tongatapu, and serves as the political and economic center. Tonga’s economy relies on agriculture, fishing, remittances from overseas Tongans, and foreign aid, with efforts underway to expand tourism and renewable energy. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system, and one of the few remaining monarchies in the Pacific. Tonga is a member of the United Nations (UN), Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), Commonwealth of Nations, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).
