The Turks and Caicos Islands is a British Overseas Territory located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas and north of Hispaniola. It consists of two groups of tropical islands—the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands—and is known for its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and luxury tourism. The capital is Cockburn Town, located on Grand Turk Island, serving as the administrative and historical center. The economy is based largely on tourism, offshore financial services, and real estate, with strong ties to the United Kingdom and the United States. As a non-sovereign territory, the UK is responsible for its defense and international affairs, but the islands have a locally elected government and a high degree of internal autonomy. The Turks and Caicos Islands is an associate member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS, associate), and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
