Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, with a southern coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It is known for its fertile plains, industrial regions, and rich cultural heritage, and has been at the center of significant geopolitical tensions, especially following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022. The capital and largest city is Kyiv, which serves as the political, cultural, and economic center. Ukraine has a developing, resource-rich economy, based on agriculture, heavy industry, IT services, and mining, with strong export sectors like grain and steel. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic and a member of the United Nations (UN), Council of Europe, Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and holds EU candidate status as of 2022.
