New logo, revamped features, new data
For the last week I've been working on some stuff that derailed the weekly glimpse article update. However, I think it was worth it.
New logo
For quite some time the old globe-like logo seemed too generic for me. I tried to reinvent it, and had some trouble approaching the new design. I wanted to keep it simple, and if possible keep the cyan colors present on the site.
It took me a while to just back off the globe concept, and think about what Measured World is really about. The tagline says it all - measure all things.
This gave me an idea to use folding rulers as a base. I think it works, and it moves away from the generic globe every similar site seems to have (for good reason, but I felt it was a bit cliché at this point).
Polished features
Before the updates, if users wanted to export a PNG image they would get the graph with a huge MW watermark in the middle. As I started to post some of my stuff on Reddit I noticed people complained about it. In the end, I moved the logo down and, in my opinion, improved the export. Now there is only a subtle logo in the lower right corner sitting above the site's URL.
One other polish I did was update the Neighboring and similar countries lists at the bottom of Overview and tab pages, so now they look just like the lists under graphs.
Finally, a relatively big update is the simplification of the Explore by Category section on the homepage. Before, it was cyan and organized in cards. After some thinking, I decided to make it lighter and more readable, and remove the cards entirely.
New data
Lastly, I added Resources as a new category to the site. At this time, it only has three metrics, but I'm working on expanding it with many more data points. The main bottlenecks are that I'm waiting for certain licenses before I put them online. One other major update can be only done manually, so I've been working hard and going through different docs. All I can say is that a major update is coming soon.
