Uzbekistan tops the global rankings for government expenditure on education (imf variant) as percentage of total government expenditure, recording 28.51% of govt expenditure in 2023, followed by Kazakhstan (19.95% of govt expenditure) and Kyrgyzstan (19.77% of govt expenditure). Tajikistan (19.67% of govt expenditure) and Chile (19.48% of govt expenditure) complete the top 5. Guatemala (19.35% of govt expenditure) and Nicaragua (19.24% of govt expenditure) follow close behind. Malaysia (18.89% of govt expenditure), Kenya (18.43% of govt expenditure), and Costa Rica (18.04% of govt expenditure) round out the top ten. The spread is substantial: Uzbekistan has 1.6× the figure recorded by Costa Rica (18.04% of govt expenditure). Five of the top ten are in Asia, with four from Central. Among these countries, Uzbekistan saw the largest year-over-year change at +31.7%.
