Uzbekistan tops the global rankings for government expenditure on education (IMF variant) as percentage of total government expenditure, recording 28.51% of govt in 2023, followed by Kazakhstan (19.95% of govt) and Kyrgyzstan (19.77% of govt). Tajikistan (19.67% of govt) and Chile (19.48% of govt) complete the top 5. Guatemala (19.35% of govt) and Nicaragua (19.24% of govt) follow close behind. Malaysia (18.89% of govt), Kenya (18.43% of govt), and Costa Rica (18.04% of govt) round out the top ten. The spread across the top ten is substantial: Uzbekistan has 1.6× the figure recorded by Costa Rica (18.04% of govt). Five of the top ten are in Asia, with four from Central Asia. Among these countries, Uzbekistan saw the largest year-over-year change at +31.7%.
