Hydroelectricity installed generating capacity (2024)

China tops the global rankings for hydroelectricity installed generating capacity, recording 377.3 million kW in 2024, followed by Brazil (110.0 million kW) and Canada (84.1 million kW). The United States (79.9 million kW) and Russia (49.1 million kW) complete the top 5. India (47.3 million kW) and Türkiye (32.8 million kW) follow close behind. Norway (32.5 million kW), Vietnam (23.7 million kW), and Japan (22.2 million kW) round out the top ten. The spread across the top ten is substantial: China has 17× the figure recorded by Japan (22.2 million kW). Five of the top ten are in Asia. Among these countries, Vietnam saw the largest year-over-year change at +3.5%.
